Luke MacFarlane used his love of woodworking to create special and sentimental gifts for Platonic costars Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne in The Area.
“When we wrapped [season 2 of] Platonic, I actually made a gift for both Rose and Seth,” MacFarlane, 45, exclusively told US Weekly about the hit Apple TV+ show. “I went through this phase where I made really beautiful little boxes.”
MacFarlane personalized the gift with lines from the show. “When you open the lid to the box, engraved on the bottom are the last lines of Platonic ,” he teased in the final shot of Season 2.
Platonic , which premiered in May 2023, explores the renewed friendship between former childhood best friends Will (Rogen) and Sylvia (Byrne) as adults. MacFarlane plays Sylvia’s husband, Charlie.
Before booking the role, MacFarlane was a consistent romantic lead in many Hallmark movies — and he got a chance to show off his woodworking skills when Home Is Where the Heart Is premiered on Hallmark+ earlier this year.
“This isn’t a show that’s just about, like, ‘We bought you a couch,’” he told Us in March. “It’s about [how] I added something that I built with my own hands to our family home.”

MacFarlane opened up about how he picked up his love of carpentry, saying, “I have a very vivid memory of going to the hardware store with my dad, and he bought me a little red toolbox,” MacFarlane previously reminded us. “I remember coming home and he took things out and he put them in that toolbox and he said, ‘This is your toolbox.’ I still have that toolbox.”
After having a child, MacFarlane is still obsessed with his first creation. “One of the first big projects I remember finishing and building and using was a canoe paddle,” he told Us Weekly. “And I still have that paddle hanging on my wall. I couldn’t be more Canadian.”
MacFarlane revealed that he even fixed up his mom’s “dream house.”
“I think there was just something inside me that loved to fix up something old,” MacFarlane explained. “I fixed up my own house. And now the projects I do [are personal] in the area. I built my daughter’s crib. I built everything in my daughter’s room, from the bookshelves to the stools. I just finished building her a little chair.”
While Platonic viewers won’t get a chance to see MacFarlane’s woodworking skills this season, they’ll have to follow Charlie as he goes through a midlife crisis. MacFarlane spoke to Us about the upcoming season, which is when he revealed which of his former projects he still hopes to bring to the show.
“I can say this now. I really, really tried to get Matthew Ray to be in The Brothers Grimm . In the end, he couldn’t do it, and in the end, the scene was cut anyway — so it was wrong. But I would love to do it [on Platonic ],” he told Us in The District. “I’ve also said that I would love to see Sally Field — who is one of the funniest people who ever lived — appear in the Platonic universe somehow.”
New episodes of Platonic air Wednesdays on Apple TV+.
