Editor’s note: There are minor spoilers for King of the Hill season 14 at this point. King of the Hill is back on the air with a new fourteenth season thanks to Hulu. The series is a welcome revival that maintains the excellent quality of the original series while also providing a refreshing update to its main characters. It’s perfectly in line with our current times. In the meantime , King of the Hill’s update succeeds where other revivals, like The Conners and Roseanne before them, failed during their runs. King of the Hill takes a much stronger, more progressive approach with how it incorporates millennial and Gen-Z material into its revival, unlike other popular shows that have received modern updates. It’s time to explore why the King of the Hill revival has already seen incredible success.

‘King of the Hill’ feels natural when using modern jokes

Right off the bat, King of the Hill uses its main character, Hank Hill ( Mike Judge ), as a sounding board for significant changes and commentary in the current generation. When Hank and his wife, Peggy ( Katie Najimy ), return to Arlen, Texas, they are shocked to discover that it is no longer the quaint, old-fashioned town they left behind. Hank experiences culture shock, noticing things like gender-neutral bathrooms, ride-sharing apps, a commercialized airport, solar power, and so on. The difference is that King of the Hill isn’t necessarily riddled with such material. Shows like The Conners’ Gen-Z and millennial jokes were lazy and poorly constructed, taking shots at the mood of the current generation. In King of the Hill, the material plays out in a much more balanced way. Jokes about modern ideologies, such as ride-sharing, the pandemic, online deliveries, and gendered bathrooms, are usually played on Hank and his friends. The humor stems from Hank’s misunderstanding of how ride-sharing apps work, and that drivers expect five stars for good service, and a four-star rating isn’t necessarily a compliment. Hank, in turn, is upset when his test driver gives him a two-star rating.

‘King of the Hill’ izmanto Bobiju kalnu, lai pārstāvētu mūsdienu jaunatni

‘King of the Hill’ ļauj Hankam būt kļūdainam

The reason King of the Hill is more effective with its material where other revivals are flawed is that the writers don’t force Hank to be an infallible character who’s right all the time . On the surface, Hank might be old-fashioned and conservative with his Texas values, but he’s not resistant to change or to being unwilling to reach the aisle on specific issues. For example, when Hank and Peggy are checking out Girl Scout cookies at the Mega Lo Mart, when the scouts point out that the Samoan cookies have been renamed “caramel delites” to be more respectful of the people from Samoa, Hank remarks that “that’s a good change.”

Also in “The Beer Story,” Hank admits that Bobby “knows more about certain things than I give him credit for, but I was too proud to listen.” This makes Hank such a likable, refreshing character. Hank isn’t so stubborn and in his own ways that he refuses to admit it when he’s wrong or makes mistakes in The Area. When he’s wrong, he admits it or tries to make amends. This was true in the original series, and it’s consistent in the revival. Later in “Bobby Gets Grilled,” Hank becomes inspired when he brings Bobby’s meal to his restaurant to bring a group of disparate people together in The Area. Although Hank was angry because Bobby refused to use propane for his restaurant, Hank understood how Bobby’s food created a common ground between all the people. The storylines unfold organically within the characters and are consistent with their writing in previous seasons, and it shows how the characters have naturally developed.
