Fans of the ITV soap are worried about the character the actor has played since 2020, who has recast the long-running role
Coronation Street star Gareth Pierce has admitted that the “sadly” plot is set for a disturbing twist as Todd Grimshaw falls victim to partner Theo Silverton.
Fans of the ITV soap are worried about the actor’s character, which he has played since 2020, who was recast in the long-running role after noticing controlling behavior from his new boyfriend Theo, who he met by chance on the pavements earlier this year.
There was an instant spark between the couple, but Theo initially wanted to keep their burgeoning romance under wraps, and Todd, unaware at the time that Theo had a secret wife, Danielle, and two children, but knowing that he was struggling with his family’s religious beliefs, revealed that he had undergone conversion therapy.
Their relationship has since faced more challenges, with Danielle discovering their romance and Theo’s daughter trying to get between the young couple to break them up.
But Theo’s behavior becomes overtly controlling when he tries to cut Todd off from two of his closest friends, Billy Mayes and Sarah Platt, before the violence turns physical.
“Todd really needs to forcefully state that this is simply not acceptable behavior in any world, but certainly not in this relationship,” Garrett said.
“There’s a scene shortly after where Todd seems to notice Theo’s pattern of not apologizing for the first time. Todd challenges that the fact that he’s going to try to move on wasn’t a big deal last night anyway. He tells him you can’t do that.”
Viewers will see Todd turn on Sarah, but ultimately defend his partner. Asked if he worries about Todd, Garrett admitted, “Yeah, definitely because Todd is constantly calibrating what’s normal and what’s acceptable in a relationship.
“So very slowly things that are already crossing the line, that are already massive red flags, are slowly becoming acceptable. It’s only going to get worse now to the point where it’s physical and Todd is still able to convince himself that this is somehow fixable and not a situation he needs to walk away from.”
While fans have already called for Todd to leave Theo and see what really happens, Garrett explained that his character isn’t there yet at that point, as Theo manages to manipulate his way out of the impending physical situation.
He shared, “There’s going to be this moment for the audience where they think that Todd has finally woken up to what’s going on and that he’s going to step up and deliver these lines, but unfortunately that’s what Theo slowly doesn’t use as he uses the effects of his past and therapy to try to explain his behavior.”
