Geeta Dutt witnessed workers demolishing a bungalow
One afternoon, Geeta was relaxing in their Pali Hill bungalow guesthouse when she heard a sudden loud explosion. She woke up around 4 p.m. and was stunned to see workers tearing down the house right in front of her eyes. Confused, she immediately called her husband. To her surprise, it was Guru himself who had asked the workers to demolish the bungalow. Although it was his dream home, he gave in to Geeta’s insistence that the place was unlucky and haunted. The incident was mentioned in Yasser Usman’s biography of the Bollywood legend.
Lalita Lajmi revealed Geeta’s fears of persecution
As shared by Guru Dutt’s sister Lalita Lajmi, who revealed Geeta’s strange feelings about the house. As quoted by Bollywoodshadis, she revealed, “She believed the bungalow was haunted. There was a special tree in the house and she said that a ghost lived in that tree which brought bad omen and ruined their marriage. She also had something against the Buddha statue that was kept in their huge living room. ” According to Lalita, Geeta advised them to leave the house, which deeply upset Guru. He had once proudly said that the bungalow was the most beautiful among all the buildings in Pali Hill.
Guru Dutt expressed his love for his dream house
Guru Dutt himself expressed how attached he was to the house. He had said, “I always wanted to be happy in my household. My house is the most beautiful of all the buildings on the Pali hill. Sitting in that house, it doesn’t feel like you are in Bombay. That garden, that atmosphere – where else can I find it? Despite that, I couldn’t stay in this house much longer.” Even with all his love for the place, he had to watch it being torn down because of Geeta’s fear.
Geeta blamed the bungalow for her marital troubles with the guru
Geeta soon began to blame the bungalow for her troubled marriage to the Guru. Many even said that their relationship problems began after they moved to the Pali Hill residence. The house, which was intended to be the Guru’s pride, soon turned into a place of sorrow. He began to suffer from sleepless nights and often escaped to his study. There, his trusted man “Friday” would open a tiny seven-foot-by-seven-foot room where the Guru could finally rest.
Lalita remembered the Guru’s heart on the day of demolition
Lalita shared how painful the demolition was for her brother. She had recalled, “I remember it was his birthday. He loved that house and he was heartbroken when it was demolished. Guru Dutt had agreed to what Geeta wanted but it broke his heart. He used to blame Geeta for the house. Geeta was suspicious and also believed in ghosts. Guru’s stars were bad. Ever since the bungalow was demolished, Guru Dutt’s house gradually fell into pieces.”
