Call of Duty games are among the most popular in the world

The creators of Call of Duty have struck a deal to turn the video game into a live-action film.

The series, which launched in 2003, is one of the most popular in the world and regularly tops the annual bestseller charts on consoles and PC.

Publisher Activision has announced that it will be partnering with movie studio Paramount to turn the game into a blockbuster “designed to thrill its massive global fan base.”

No potential storylines or cast members have been revealed, but Paramount CEO David Ellison said, “As a lifelong Call of Duty fan, this is truly a dream come true.”

Ellison said he has spent “countless hours” playing Call of Duty games, and that bringing them to the big screen is “an honor and a responsibility we don’t take lightly.”

Activision president Rob Kostic said the film will aim to use the same imagination seen in the games to “create an unforgettable film experience that our community loves, and one that also excites and inspires new fans of the franchise.”

There have been 23 main entries in the Call of Duty series, with each set in a different time period and a storyline loosely inspired by real-life conflicts and situations.

According to Activision, the series has sold over 500m games since its launch.

It’s the latest in a long line of video games, including The Legend of Zelda, Elden Ring, and The Sims, to be adapted into movies.

This is off the back of the success of 2023’s Super Mario Bros. movie and this year’s A Minecraft movie, as well as the popularity of TV series like The Last of Us and Fallout.

Paramount has previously released the successful film adaptation of Sonic The Hedgehog, and is the studio that will go on to release action hits Top Gun: Maverick and Mission: Impossible.

Last year, the studio merged with US media company Skydance and has since signed deals including a $7.7 billion deal for the rights to the mixed martial arts tournament UFC.
