Demi Moore has offered her support to Bruce Willis’ wife, Emma Heming-Willis, for his ongoing battle with dementia.
Two years ago, the Die Hard star’s family announced that he had been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia (FTD), a year after he retired from his acting career.
Emma, 47, took on the care responsibilities but was criticised after she revealed the tough decisions she was forced to make in caring for the 70-year-old, including her choice to send him to a care home.
During the exit, the host on Oprah Winfrey’s show played her a pre-recorded excerpt from a chat with Demi, who talked about how she became Bruce’s caregiver and her book about her experiences.
“There’s no roadmap for how to handle it. Obviously, being an ex-wife—even though our family is very connected—is an interesting position,” the 62-year-old actress said. “So much fell on Emma to really figure this whole thing out.”
“The most beautiful thing, and she talks about it in the book, was recognizing the importance of caregivers, that they have to take care of themselves. If they don’t take that time to make sure they’re okay, they can’t show up for anyone else.”
“I have so much sympathy for Emma, as a young woman. There’s no way anyone could have predicted where this would go. I really think she’s done a masterful job.”
“She is so dedicated to forging the right path. She has had equal amounts of fear, endurance, and courage to move it. I think this book will really be very helpful to a lot of people who are walking it.”
Bruce and Demi were married for about 11 years and welcomed daughters Rumer, Scout, and Tallulah together.
Despite their split in 1998, the couple made sure to stay close for the sake of their family and have continued to remain friends over the years, even quarantining together during the pandemic.
When asked how it feels to see suffering in someone she has shared a large part of her life with, the ghost icon added, “It’s hard. It’s hard to see someone who is so dynamic and strong and so driven move on to other parts of themselves.”
“My particular perspective is that I really always say that it’s so important to just meet them where they are. Don’t expect them to be who they were or who you want them to be.”
“When you do that, I find there’s an incredible sweetness and something that’s soft and gentle and loving.”
“When you stay present, there is so much there, and there is still so much there. And it may not always be verbal, but it is beautiful in terms of gifts.”
FTD is a “less common” form of the disease that causes sufferers to have problems with behavior and language.
Although there is currently no cure, his family has used their platforms to raise as much awareness as possible for other sufferers.
Emma, who married Bruce in 2009 and shares daughters Evelyn and Mabel with the Hollywood legend, recently sat down with Diane Sawyer to give an update on his condition.

Saskaņā ar NHSfrontotemporālās demences pazīmes var ietvert:
- Personība un uzvedība mainās – rīkojoties neatbilstoši vai impulsīvi, parādoties savtīgai vai nesimpātiskai, atstājot novārtā personīgo higiēnu, pārēšanās vai motivācijas zaudēšanu
- Valodas problēmas – lēnām runāšana, cīņa, lai radītu pareizas skaņas, sakot vārdu, sakot vārdus nepareizā secībā vai nepareizi lietojot vārdus
- Problēmas ar garīgajām spējām – viegli apjucis, cīnoties ar plānošanu un organizāciju
- Atmiņas problēmas – tās mēdz rasties tikai vēlāk, atšķirībā no biežākajām demences formām, piemēram Alcheimera slimība
Var būt arī fiziskas problēmas, piemēram, lēnas vai stīvas kustības, urīnpūšļa vai zarnu kontroles zudums (parasti tikai vēlāk), muskuļu vājums vai grūtības norīt.

‘Tas ir viens no grūtākajiem lēmumiem, kas man jebkad ir jāpieņem. Brūss kopumā ir ļoti lielā veselībā. Viņu neizdodas tikai viņa smadzenes.
‘Valoda notiek, mēs esam iemācījušies pielāgoties. Un mums ir veids, kā sazināties ar viņu, kas ir tikai atšķirīgs, atšķirīgs veids. ”
Troksnis var uzbudināt tos, kuri cieš no FTD, un Emma pieņēma lēmumu dot savam partnerim visu diennakti aprūpēt atsevišķās mājās pēc tam, kad sākotnēji “izolēja” savu ģimeni.
Kamēr viņš, iespējams, ir pārcēlies, viņa uzstāja, ka viņi katru dienu pavada brokastis un vakariņas kopā, kamēr viņa draugi un ģimene regulāri apmeklē.
Viņa arī atklāja, ka viņš atpazīst ģimeni un “iedegas”, kad viņš tos redz.
‘Viņš tur mūsu rokas. Mēs viņu skūpstām. Mēs viņu apskaujam. Viņš ir savstarpēji. Viņš tajā iedziļinās, ”viņa piebilda.
‘Un tā tas ir viss, kas man vajadzīgs. Man nevajag, lai viņš zinātu, ka esmu viņa sieva, un mēs šajā dienā bijām precējušies, un tas ir tas, kas tas ir – man tas nav vajadzīgs. Es tikai gribu sajust, ka man ir saikne ar viņu. Un es to daru.
