Viewers had the same thought, as they considered the first technicality of the 2025 series to be cruel.
The Great British Bake Off is back, and viewers seemed to all agree that the show made a “tough decision” in the first episode.
The hit Channel 4 competition, which moved from the BBC in 2017, first aired in 2010. While it has undergone a few changes over the past decade and a half, the homeliness of GBBO has remained the same.
With the new 2025 series airing from Tuesday 2 September, the tent once again welcomes 12 amateur bakers as they battle it out for ten weeks.
The main theme will change each episode. Previous years have featured chocolate week, bread week, and pastry week. However, the three challenges will remain the same: signature, technical, and show sponsor.
Sadly, one baker will be eliminated each week if their baking doesn’t quite meet the judges’ expectations. On the other hand, one lucky contestant will be named Star Baker.
With the winner of the 2025 series still weeks away, viewers may recall that the winner of the Great British Bake Off 2024 was Georgie Grasso.
She was the first Welsh winner to be crowned after ten weeks of fierce competition.
However, for the Bakers, the final seemed a world away on Tuesday’s (September 2) installment as they battled a technicality.
With their first challenge of making a patterned Swiss roll behind them, the bakers were tasked with making fondant fondants in the technical challenge.
However, they introduced a twist where they had different ingredients in front of them, but not all of them were meant for the recipe. They also gave the bakers a fondant concoction to taste test and look at to figure out what they should do.
As the breadwinners shook their heads in frustration, viewers took to X (formerly known as Twitter) as they shared the same thought – that it was a tough challenge in the first week.
@AAMA25_EM wrote: “The technical is so ridiculously hard this week,” as @bwench88 added: “Oooh, that’s a tough technical for a first week… I love it!”
Another viewer @jessiehxsking agreed: “This is one average technical challenge,” and @kitkat966 echoed: “Giving them extra ingredients is wicked… I love it!”
Tom came in last for the first technical, while Toby was crowned the winner of the challenge. However, Paul urged everyone to “not applaud” as he dismissed the fact that they were still not perfect.
