During a chat on the official Wednesday Podcast — or rather, diss — Old Newcomer Evie Templeton discussed Agnes coming into her own after being a fan favorite on Netflix’s The Addams.
After Wednesday (Jenna Ortega) takes her place at the end of Tim Burton’s show’s second season, seemingly forcing her to be herself as much as possible, Agnes is emotionally gutted in a way that could have been villainous but ends up in a surprisingly positive direction.
“I think the important message in this episode is that it’s okay to stand out, and it’s okay to be yourself, and being yourself is the best version of yourself that you can be, it’s okay to stand in your individuality,” she said of the moment Wednesday stopped the pick-me-up energy dead in its tracks. “I think it’s just a moment of pure devastation. I think all of her efforts really haven’t led to anything, and she’s tried so hard and put so much into it that it’s really just a moment of pure heartache; for her idol to have to tell her that she’s failed and that she’s not good enough is truly heartbreaking.”
She noted, “I think it also acts as a pretty important moment because then she kind of embraces her individuality and she stands out from her braids” — referring to the copycat hairstyle that made her look more like Wendy’s mascot than her idol.
Templeton’s hopes for Wednesday’s stalker-turned-crime-solving partner lie in becoming friends with Enid (Emma Myers) rather than seeing her as competition. “Well, I think they have a lot in common. They both admire Wednesday so much, and I think they can both also recognize that underneath Wednesday’s tough, rocky exterior, that she has a lot of compassion, and she’s a very loyal friend.”
The new friendship is cemented by their performance at Lady Gaga’s “The Dead Dance” celebration.
“I think it’s at the point where she’s obviously in her beautiful green dress and she’s got her new hairstyle that she kind of realizes that [Enid’s] advice about being yourself—psycho—has really affected her in the best possible way, and I think that’s a really important message, especially for my generation, to not feel like you have to conform, and to realize that you can break out of the mold and be yourself, and not feel pressured to be what everyone else thinks you should be.”
Templeton continued to sing the praises of her dance partner, which is a great place to start the Enid and Agnes team-up. “Emma is the sweetest girl. She’s so sweet. I think we have a lot in common, which was great. That [Gaga’s dance sequence] was something that connected us from the start.”
She hopes it solidifies Agnes’ place in the group of friends as their invisibility-powered mystery-solving partner. “I really want to see that trio dynamic. I’d like to see how it progresses, like the Three Musketeers.”
Wednesday’s second season is now streaming on Netflix.
