Something has been happening to my wardrobe for the past month or so. Even though I’ve been slowly clearing out everything from my baking cabinet to my bedside table, I can barely fit enough clothes on my hanging shelves.

This is a recent change, and I know what’s to blame; Fall, that tricky “is it blistering hot or soaking wet? Both!” season has arrived, which means I’ve bought a couple of sweaters but haven’t packed my crop top away.

It’s time, I think, for a wardrobe clean-out.

And luckily, Paul Gray from clothing website Chums has shared three questions that could make it easier to get the job done.

How can I clean out my wardrobe for fall?

According to Gray, “deciding whether to keep these less-worn pieces can be made easier by asking yourself these three questions.”

  1. Can I pair this item with other clothing items to create at least three outfits?
  2. Does this item of clothing have any special sentimental value?
  3. If I had to go to an event or do a job/task that an item of clothing is due tomorrow, would this item be a strong contender for my outfit?

You don’t have to do this with every piece of clothing in your wardrobe, he advised.

You can go section by section or clothing type by clothing type; maybe one day you can sort through your shirts, and another day you can tackle your pants.

Gray added: “To be even more ruthless, you might want to set limits on your wardrobe.

“For example, you could set limits on how many clothing items, such as dresses, you will keep. Creating a capsule wardrobe can be a great way to reduce excess clothing.”

Are there any other ways to clean out your wardrobe?

Yes-gays like the 90/90 style elimination method.

If you’re not sure whether to keep or lose some clothes, he suggested, “Put maybe a pile in a box and put it somewhere out of the way, then add a reminder to your calendar or phone.”

“If you haven’t missed any of the items in three months, that’s a good sign, you won’t miss them if you get rid of them.”

BRB, just about to set the alarm…
