If you’re looking for a new thriller to sink your teeth into this week, look no further.
The BBC has dropped all four episodes of Guest on iPlayer, allowing viewers to dive into the tense psychological thriller in one go.
The synopsis from the Beeb reads: “The Guest is a sloppy, twisted thriller that focuses on the intense, toxic relationship between a cleaner, Ria (Gabrielle Creevy), and her mysterious employer, Fran (Eve Myles).
“As the lives of two women become intertwined with shared secrets, an obsessive codependency emerges that ultimately threatens to become a dangerous and manipulative-psychological game of cat and mouse.”
Writer Matthew Barry was inspired by 90s thrillers like The Rock That Rocks the Cradle and Pacific Heights, while Ria’s character is “deeply concerned with class differences.”
“I wanted to make a fun, twisty thriller, but with the unique perspective of a working-class character,” he told the BBC.

While the mini-series certainly sounds dark, Matthew insisted that he always “wanted the tone to be character-driven and layered with humor.”

“I think sometimes mixing drama and comedy can be risky, but I think it’s essential. The Sopranos is my favorite drama, and it’s also my favorite comedy, so I think life itself is a balance of the two,” he explained.
“With Guest, I’ve tried to balance thrills, twists, and scares with a deeper character-driven story and tone that feels both interesting and authentic.”

White Lines director Ashley Wade is at the helm, and was influenced by the likes of Gone Girl to create the right mood.
“We started setting the tone by looking at other female-led thrillers, things like Gone Girl, a lot of David Fincher’s work, and psychological thriller work,” he said.
“It lent us a certain style and aesthetic because we wanted it to be very cinematic. We wanted it to have an elevated look, that the world should be attractive and enticing, so it had to have this attractive, enticing style.”
The Guest airs tonight (September 1) at 9pm on BBC One. All episodes are now available to stream on iPlayer.
