Sally Dynevor is set to mark 40 years in the role of Sally Metcalfe on the ITV soap next year
Sally Dynevor has detailed what it’s really like to work on one of the country’s biggest soaps as she revealed when her Coronation Street contract could end.
Fans best know the actress for playing her name Sally Metcalfe in the ITV soap. Sally has been on the show since making her debut on the show in 1986.
Next year, the Corrie legend will celebrate 40 years in her famous role – if she reveals her contract has been renewed in the coming months.
Speaking to Matthew Lucas and David Walliams for their broadcast, while creating the scene, Sally revealed, “So, I’ve only been signed for a year.” As David asked, “At the same time?” Sally confirmed, “At the same time!”
David went on to ask if it was the same Sally co-star William ‘Bill’ Roache, who has played Ken Barlow since the very first episode of Corrie in December 1960.
“Yes,” she confirmed. “We all do. You always think ‘this is the year’….” David asked again if Bill would think the same thing, to which Sally said, “Yes, I imagine. None of us are optional. There are always other people and other stories to tell.”
Matthew went on to ask if all the actors on the show sat down around the same time to find out their fates, to which Sally revealed, “No, it’s different. All the parents, and that’s me, we find out between November and January.”
After her current contract ends, Sally confirmed, “Mine is at the end of January,” to which Matthew replied, “So you’re not announcing much?” As Sally laughed, “No!”
In July, Sally spoke about her Corrie Future as she prepares to celebrate 40 years on the show in 2026 and shared her hopes of staying on the show until she is in her “70s and 80s”.
Sally told the new issue of Women’s Weekly magazine: “I’m not a quitter.” She added: “I want to keep working, it’s good for my brain. So if they still want me, maybe I’ll be on the show in the ’70s and ’80s. I’ll just keep going.”
She continued, “It’s such a great job and I feel so grateful that I still have it after 40 years. I’m not in it as much as I used to be, but I was riding the other day and when the barrier went up I just had this huge smile because I felt like I was home. I knew I was going to have a fun day.”
Sally also shared how important it is for her to have a strong work-life balance. She said, “I have such a nice routine now. On my day off, I’ll go to the gym or go swimming in the morning, then come back and have breakfast. I might go for a walk, and then I’ll meet up with a friend.”
Sally celebrated her 60th birthday in 2023 and says she feels a sense of freedom at her age. She explained, “I’m really enjoying this time of my life. In your 60s, you can just be yourself. You don’t have to worry about all the things that younger people get upset about.”
