In September 2025, Nepal is engulfed in deep political turmoil. The country has witnessed the Gen-Z protests, a youth-led uprising sparked by a government ban on major social media platforms but driven more broadly by deep frustration over corruption, nepotism and a lack of economic opportunity. In September 2025, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned along with several government ministers and fled the country. Former Nepali President Sushila Karki has now been named its interim prime minister, making her the first woman to hold the highest office in the neighboring nation.
Nepal’s first Prime Minister BP Koirala and his Indian connection
As Sushila Karki becomes Nepal’s first Prime Minister, we look at the country’s first elected Prime Minister, Bishweshwar Prasad Koirala, who served the nation from 1959 to 1960, and his connection to India. BP Koirala’s son, Prakash Koirala, served as Nepal’s Minister for Science, Technology and Environment from 2005 to 2006. Prakash’s children, Manisha Koirala and Siddharth Koirala, became actors. While Manisha became a star in Bollywood, Siddharth never tasted success.
Film career of Siddharth Koirala
Siddharth Koirala started his career as a producer with the 2004 film Paisa Vasool. He then wrote the US film Terrorism: Bio Attack, which premiered on television in 2005. That same year, Siddharth made his Bollywood debut with the hilarious Sometimes Can Be Dangerous. His most famous film was the 2007 romantic thriller Anwar. It flopped at the box office, but its two songs Maula Simply Maula and Tose Naina are still popular today. Siddharth’s last two Hindi films – Dekh Bhai Dekh and DeShdrohi 2 – were released in 2009. In 2014, he even tried his hand at the Nepali film Megha, but that too bombed at the box office. Since then, Siddharth Koirala has almost disappeared from public life, but he does have a private Instagram account.
