The first few episodes of The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox give viewers a glimpse into how 20-year-old American Knox ( Grace Van Patten ) came to study abroad in Perugia, Italy. It also details Amanda’s life before the murder, including her newfound relationship with her boyfriend, Raffael Sollecito (Giuseppe de Domenico). Knox lived with several women in an apartment in Perugia while she attended school, and one of her roommates was Kercher ( Rhianne Barreto ), a 21-year-old British woman. On November 2, 2007, Kercher was found dead in their apartment in Perugia. She had been brutally murdered; police discovered that she had been stabbed multiple times, sexually assaulted, and her throat had been slit. Knox told police that she had been at Sollecito’s all night and when she came home that morning she found the front door open and then noticed bloodstains in the bathroom. Knox and Sollecito called the police as soon as they realized something was wrong and that Kercher’s bedroom door was locked.

It makes sense that we don’t get many details about who Kercher was before her death. The storytelling in Amanda Knox’s twisted tale is pulled from Knox’s own experiences. The most tragic part about Guede’s actions is that, outside of the people who were close to her, Kercher’s name isn’t remembered, although Knox’s certainly is.

Perhaps one day there will be a series that tells these tragic events from Kercher’s perspective. The loss of her life is the most haunting aspect of the story, and it often takes a backseat to the many details surrounding Knox’s trial and imprisonment. Kercher’s family is not happy that Knox is still in control of the narrative of this crime. Their lawyer said in a statement that “once again, we have to offer an attempt to change the cards, where the trailers declare ‘Amanda fights tirelessly to prove her innocence and regain her freedom.’ Once again, the focus is on Knox.” The family believes that the twisted tale of Amanda Knox is “disrespectful” and just a cash grab. Unfortunately, Kercher and her life are often forgotten in the narrative of what happened to her.
