Ethan Plath made his sister Lydia Plath cry on the latest episode of Welcome to Plathville by criticizing her whirlwind romance with Zac Wyse before their engagement.
“I want you to be happy, and I’m so happy to see you happy. But I just have to say this,” Ethan, 27, said to his younger sister, 21, on the Tuesday, Aug. 5, episode of the TLC series. “You’ve only known her for three months and you’ve been married for two months. Are you sure you’re okay with that?”
While Lydia said she was sure Zach was the one, Ethan questioned the speed of their engagement and subsequent marriage. (Zach and Lydia set their wedding date before he popped the question.)
“It’s too fast. It’s too much. … I don’t really know him. I don’t really like him. Just to be honest with you,” Ethan told Lydia, admitting that he didn’t have a specific reason for his feelings. “I just don’t like him, but I don’t know if it’s because I don’t know him yet or if it’s just because I’m protecting you and it’s all really fast.”
Lydia was silent and before hugging her big brother. Ethan finally said, “I feel like I don’t really know you. I don’t talk to you much, now that you’re gone.”
The siblings had their own heart-to-heart before Zac’s surprise proposal, and through tears realized that maybe Zac wasn’t their thing—at least not entirely.
“It’s just the first time I’ve really felt like you care,” Lydia confessed to Ethan, who replied, “I didn’t know you didn’t.”

Lydia then told the cameras that while her brother “really doesn’t like Zach,” she thinks “it’s a lot deeper than that.”
“I think the problem is more that he doesn’t know me very well,” she continued. “And that’s a hard reality to face.”
“I wish we had more opportunities to be close,” Lydia told Ethan through tears afterward. “I know it must have been hard with you in Minnesota, and there was never a chance to express that.”
Ethan replied, “Now you know,” admitting, “I’m just being hard on Zach because I think you’re just amazing and no one would ever be good enough for you.”
The eldest Platt sibling later told the cameras that he could hear how far Lydia felt, that he had been “a little stingy.” Ethan also revealed that while it was “not my place” to have Lydia marry Zach so quickly, he wanted to make sure she was “careful.”
“I’ve seen him protect [our sister] Morrie on occasion, and I knew that he and Morrie were really close. I just always wanted that for myself, and I feel like I probably got it today,” Lydia said in her confessional. “Not that he has anything to protect me from, but just that he shows that he cares.”
While Ethan has been vocal all season about how quickly Zach and Lydia moved on, the couple got engaged in December 2024. (Fans will see the proposal next week on the TLC episode.)
Lydia and Zach tied the knot in February, surrounded by their loved ones, including Ethan, who was on hand to celebrate. The ceremony took place at Plath Farm in Georgia.
