Lewis Capaldi has called out fellow celebrities who he says pretended to support him during his two-year retreat from the spotlight.

The Scottish singer, 28, retired from music in 2023 after an emotional performance on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury left him visibly struggling with his Tourette’s symptoms.

As his voice broke out, thousands of fans lined up to finish his closing number – a moment of mass solidarity that drew many to watch.

Days later, Capaldi announced that he would be taking an indefinite break to prioritize his mental and physical health.

Now back on stage – and with a triumphant return to Glastonbury this summer – Capaldi has revealed the reality of those months away from the spotlight.

Speaking about hits radio, he admitted that while some stars truly spoke, others only claimed to have.

“After the first Glastonbury I got a call from Elton John who said it was a great idea to take a break and that kind of thing,” he said.

“Obviously Niall Horan. I’m in a group chat with Niall, so I talk to him quite a bit.”

But not everyone was as genuine. “There were some people who said they were checking me in who weren’t,” he added, calling the behavior “strange.”

Reflecting further on the reveal appearance this past weekend with Theo Vaughn, Capaldi explained that the difficult Glastonbury, set for 2023, ultimately became a turning point.

“Because Glastonbury is such a big stage, it was the first time people outside of my shows had seen it,” he said.

“When I got off the stage, it was weird, I had this feeling of, ‘Now everything is okay, I can actually go and get help and fix myself for the next two years.'”

He described the experience as a blessing in disguise: “In a weird way, it’s probably the best thing that ever happened to me. I wouldn’t have stopped otherwise. Someone upstairs was like, ‘This has to happen differently now…’ I don’t want to think where I would be now if I had continued.”
