Principal photography has begun on the upcoming film from Polish filmmaker Paweł Pawlikowski.
The film will be shot in Poland, Germany and Italy. It stars Sandra Hüller (Area of Interest), August Diehl (Secret Life), Anna Madeley (Patrick Melrose), Devid Striesow (All Quiet on the Western Front), Theo Treb (White Ribbon) and Hanns Zischler (Munich, Universal Theory).
The official synopsis for the film reads: Set at the height of the Cold War in 1949, the film focuses on the relationship between writer Thomas Mann (Hanns Zischler) and his daughter Erika (Sandra Hüller); an actress, journalist, and rally driver, as they journey in a black Buick Cruiser across a Germany in ruins – from Nazi-dominated Frankfurt to Soviet-controlled Weimar.
The film is produced by Mario Gianani and Lorenzo Mieli of Our Films, Ewa Puszczynsk of Extreme Emotions, Jeanne Trema and Edward Berger of Nine Hours and Lorenzo Gangarossa of Circle One.
The creative team includes cinematographer Lukasz Zal, costume designer Aleksandra Staszko, editor Piotr Wójcik, production designers Katarzyna Sobańska and Marcel Sławiński, and composer Marcin Marsecki.
Pawlikowski’s last feature was Cold War (2018), which debuted at Cannes and won the Best Director award. The film was also nominated for Best Foreign Language Film, Best Director, and Best Cinematography at the Oscars. The filmmaker is perhaps best known for IDAM, which won 5 European Film Awards and the 2015 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
