Court raises concerns over sealed coverage request
As reported by PTI, Justice Jyoti Singh, who is hearing the case, said allowing Priya’s application could create difficulties for the children to defend their claim. Priya’s application sought to file the list in a sealed cover or alternatively, to create a “confidentiality club” where access would be restricted. The judge, however, pointed out the potential problems with such secrecy. “Allowing the application could be problematic for the simple reason that as the potential beneficiary of the estate (of Karisma’s children Samaira Kapoor and Kiaan Raj Kapoor) they have the right to question the assets that have been disclosed. So, tomorrow, if they have to be examined and asked whether they have committed any crime, if they are bound by this confidentiality club, how will they ever defend themselves?” Justice Singh asked.
Priya Kapur stresses the need for confidentiality
Kapoor’s lawyer argued that confidentiality was necessary because of the sensitive nature of the information. “There is banking information, other financial information. Why should the public have someone’s bank account number?” the lawyer asked. The lawyer also said that “press conferences” were held after previous hearings and the case attracted too much attention.
Children defy their late father’s will
The case began when Samaira and Kian challenged their father’s will. They claim that as his children, they are entitled to a share of his vast estate, reportedly worth Rs 30,000 crore. On September 10, the Delhi High Court ordered Priya to provide a complete list of Sanjay Kapur’s assets. Thursday’s hearing focused on how exactly this information should be disclosed, openly, under seal or with restrictions.
