Last night’s Emmy Awards were huge with many stars walking away with statues, though perhaps none as big as Cristin Milioti. The actress won an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series for her work on Penguin. Milioti’s performance as Sofia the First in the limited series won over both audiences and Emmy voters. However, if fans were hoping to see her character in Batman Part II, they should know that there’s some bad news on that front.
Matthew Reeves, the director and co-writer of Batman Part II, asked MTV if fans would get to see Milioti’s character in the new film. Ultimately, Reeves was honest, saying that unfortunately, it won’t happen. While he praised her performance, the filmmaker explained that Sofia’s appearance won’t be possible for one main reason. Reeves explained…
Kristin’s not in this one, but that’s because by the time we were on the show, we were so deep into the script. But we’ll see. I think she’s incredible. What she did on the show was just amazing.
So it seems like Sofia isn’t involved because the script is already well-developed by the time Sofia becomes a breakout character. This will undoubtedly be a disappointment for many fans. There were those in some circles who felt that Penguin was even better than Batman , and Milioti was certainly a big reason for that opinion. Having her in the film, even in a smaller role, would have been appreciated by fans who want to see plot threads from the series (available with an HBO Max subscription) continue in some way.
Unfortunately, it seems like the story of Batman Part II (which DC Studios’ James Gunn has finally read the script for) is simply going in a direction where including the character wouldn’t make sense. That’s probably for the best, as the only thing worse than not having him in the mix would be not including him for any real reason other than to do so. Reeves continued…
It could break the apple cart, let’s say, given where the story is and what we researched. There are some things where it’s like oh, we’d love to do that, but it doesn’t really fit where the story is going.
Matthew Reeves is definitely leaving the door open for the possibility of seeing Sofia Gigante at some point in the future. While the original plan wasn’t for Penguin Season 2, there’s at least a chance it could happen. Milioti herself is hoping to play the character again.
In any case, you should know that Batman Part II hits theaters on October 1, 2027.
