Google’s URL shortener has become a hugely popular tool over the years. It essentially lets you take long URLs and condense them into concise links that are easier to share on other platforms. However, the company announced the platform’s demise back in 2018. Last year, the company announced that links shortened by Google’s URL shortener would soon no longer prompt a response. That change is finally happening next month.

Google URL Shortener Deprecation

In a blog post dated July 2024, Google announced that goo.gl links will now have an interstitial page. These will appear before navigating to the original landing page to notify users of the upcoming deprecation until the shutdown date. The company also said that the links will no longer be supported after August 25, 2025, and no response will be returned.

So, if you have any links shortened with Google’s tool, they will stop working for exactly a month. According to the company, all developers who use links created with Google’s URL shortener will be affected.

Although Google has not allowed the generation of new shortened links since 2018, it has continued to serve existing URLs. Last year, the tech giant provided a one-year window to facilitate the migration of these links to another URL shortener provider.

After August 25, opening a page whose link has been shortened with a Google tool will return a 404 response. But why the deprecation?

According to Google, shortened URLs have seen a decline in traffic over the years. The company found that 99 percent of the links had not registered any activity in the month of June 2024. It has since replaced Google’s URL shortener with Firebase Dynamic Links (FDL). These are considered “smart URLs” that allow users to send others to anywhere on iOS, Android, or the web app.

However, some services will be exempt from the deprecation. The company said that goo.gl links generated using Google apps, such as Maps for location sharing, will continue to work even after the August 25 deadline.
