Google has reportedly laid off more than 200 AI employees who demanded higher compensation and better working conditions. The employees were brought in by Google to evaluate its AI tools, such as Gemini and AI Reports, according to a report in Wired . These employees evaluate, edit, rewrite, and fine-tune Gemini Chatbot responses to make them sound more “human” and natural.

These contractors include writers, teachers, and creatives; some who have completed a doctorate or master’s degree are classified as super rates.

Several of these contractors are underpaid and deal with difficult working conditions, the outlet reported. The group had tried to form a union earlier this year, but such attempts were thwarted.

While Google did not explain the reasoning behind the layoffs, it told employees that it was “cutting back on the project.” The contractors claim the layoffs were a response to their complaints.

A pair of laid-off employees have filed a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board, stating that they were unfairly dismissed.

The contractors demanded job security because they were working under stressful conditions while being underpaid. As discussions about these complaints grew among them, Google banned them from using internal social channels in February.
