For 50 years, audiences around the world have watched and marveled at the brilliance of Jaws . It has long been one of the true masterpieces in film history, and starting next week, you’ll be able to experience it in a way you never have before: by actually being in its presence. On September 14, the Academy Museum in Los Angeles, California, opens “ Jaws : The Exhibition,” an unprecedented collection of more than 200 artifacts from the development, production, and release of Steven Spielberg’s classic. And if you consider yourself a fan, you won’t be able to contain your joy and amazement at what it means.
IO9 was invited to a press preview of the exhibition, which included opening remarks from Academy President Amy Homme, exhibition curator Jenny He, and Spielberg himself. The director regaled the audience with a few stories from the making of the film (many of which are told in an equally excellent documentary released this year), but he also spoke about his amazement at what the exhibit actually had in store.
Spielberg spoke of “a collection of memories that were stimulating just in the last hour and a half of walking through the exhibition, that they have so ingeniously gathered from the archives of collectors around the world.”
These collectors “somehow knew something I didn’t,” the director continued. “I mean, why wouldn’t anybody… when we shot the opening scene of Chrissie Watkins being taken by the shark, and we had a buoy floating in the water, how did anybody know to take the buoy and take it home and sit on it for 50 years and then loan it to the Academy? How did they know? I didn’t know. I thought my career was virtually over halfway through production on Jaws .
Well, you knew a little something, Steven. Because while yes, the buoy and much more were donated by private collectors, the exhibit is also filled with pieces from Spielberg’s collection. The exhibit features screenshots of barrels from Orkney . It has the main character’s actual costumes. It has Hooper’s backpack, Quint’s beer, a shark cage, a spear, and Ben Gardner’s head. All the original props that appear in the movie itself. Some of them are from private collectors, some are from the studio, and some are from Spielberg, but all of them are so close to something you’ve seen so many times in the movie that it’s almost indescribable.

But that’s not all. These props are spread across a multi-room space that takes up the entire fourth floor of the museum and follows the film’s narrative as its structure. You enter through the opening credits in seaweed and emerge on a beach. There are props and stories about the making of the opening greeting. Then there’s the main Brody house and objects from the town of Amity Island, all the way to the end, which concludes with the film’s story, Orca the mechanical shark, and more.

VaiŽokļi: Izstāde ”būs apskatāma, sākot no 14. septembra un notiks līdz 2026. gada 26. jūlijam.
