Over the past couple of weeks, a famous GIF has been making the rounds on Work WhatsApp groups.
From a comic strip by KC Green, it shows a dog called Question Hound sitting at a table with a cup of coffee, oblivious to the fact that the room he’s sitting in is on fire. Above him is the caption “it’s okay.”
For many Labour MPs, the image perfectly sums up No. 10’s attitude to the multiple crises facing the government.
It is less than two weeks since Keir Starmer launched the “second phase” of his government with a major shake-up of his No. 10 team.
In the accompanying video posted on X, the Prime Minister said the government is entering the new parliamentary term “in good spirits, confident and with conviction”.
The prime minister has since lost his deputy, forced into a major cabinet reshuffle, and had to let go of the British ambassador to Washington, whom he personally appointed against the advice of Foreign Office officials.
Clearly, case No. 10 is very far from subtle.
Several Labour MPs contacted by Huffpost UK say morale among their colleagues is through the floor, and the Prime Minister’s own future is now being openly discussed.
One told Huffpost UK: “H E has completely lost the dressing room. His own position is also being questioned now. The sooner we address this the better.
“We have a Prime Minister who has not got a clue about politics. The sooner we understand this nettle about his leadership the better, because we need two or three terms of a Labour government to turn this country around.”
Most Labour MPs see May next year as the moment of maximum danger for Starmer.
The Scottish Parliament, the Welsh Senedd and councils across England on May 7 could be disastrous for Labour and provide further evidence that the reform surge is not a mirage.
“He’s in a lot of trouble if things haven’t improved significantly by then,” said one Labor insider.
The chances of that happening seem remote. When parliament sat for six weeks in July, Labour MPs were told to take a two-week break and spend the rest of the time with constituents.
“Voters said we like you personally but we hate Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves,” the source said. “It’s just added to the sense of absolute desperation.”
Some are even talking about the Prime Minister being gone by the end of the year, although given the Labour Party’s less than stellar record of getting rid of underperforming leaders, it seems like a choice on their part.
But one Labour veteran pointed out: “ If you get enough MPs saying you have to go, his position will become untenable.”
However, the debate is not just about the prime minister’s position. Many believe the next person to show up at the door should be his chief of staff and long-time adviser Morgan McEwan.
Many blame him for the reshuffle, which, if anything, has simply made the mood in the Parliamentary Labor Party (PLP) even more somber.
“Even some of the ministers who got promotions are angry,” said one source.

Plaši tiek uzskatīts, ka Lūsija Pauela un Ians Murejs ir atlaisti no kabineta, jo viņi iepriekš bija šķērsojuši Makveiniju, kura ietekme uz Starmeru ir milzīga.
Pēc deputātu negatīvā reakcijas Nr.10 bija spiests padarīt Murray par jaunāko ministru divās dažādās nodaļās tikai 24 stundas pēc tam, kad paziņoja par aiziešanu no valdības.
Pauels vēl varēja atriebties Starmeram un Makveinejam, jo viņu ievēlēja par leiboristu vadītāja vietnieku, kas ir viens no ziņām, kuru pagājušajā nedēļā atbrīvoja Angela Rayner.
Lēmums padarīt Imogen Walker – McSweeney sievu – valdības pātagu ir arī slikti samazinājies, arī tāpēc, ka viņai ir pievienojies Gregors Pointons un Džeks Ričards, respektējot Starmera jaunā politiskā direktora Amy Richards vīru un brāli.
“Tas ir kā politbiro,” sacīja viens leiboristu priekšgals. “Jums vajadzētu būt iespējai klusēt vārdu ar pātagām par visām bažām par PM. Kā mēs to varam izdarīt tagad?”
Bet tieši McSweeney iesaistīšanās Pītera Mandelsona iecelšanā par Lielbritānijas vēstnieku Amerikā visvairāk ir pakļauta viņa pozīcijai.
“Tas varētu izraisīt pilnīgu partijas sabrukumu – tas ir eksistenciāli”
Tuvs leiboristu vienaudžu sabiedrotais, Makveinijs bija pretrunīgi vērtētā gājiena virzītājspēks, neskatoties uz to, ka bažas tika paustas par Mandelsona pagātnes draudzību ar notiesāto pedofilu Džefriju Epšteinu.
Vecākie darba avoti ir arī teikuši Huffpost UK, ka McSweeney iebilda pret viņa atlaišanu, pat ja e -pasti atklāja, ka Mandelsons sacīja Epšteinam “jūsu draugi paliek pie jums un mīl jūs”, jo viņš 2008. gadā saskārās ar bērnu nepilngadīgu seksu.
Štāba priekšnieka sabiedrotie uzstāj, ka viņš galu galā atbalstīja Starmera lēmumu atbrīvoties no Mandelsona pakalpojumiem, taču sākotnējā iecelšanas ietekmīgā loma ir vēl viena melna atzīme pret daudziem deputātiem.
Viens teica: “McSweeney sevi uzskata par politisku Svengali, bet viņam ir jāsakrata galva.”
Tomēr citi uzskata, ka tam ir par vēlu.
“Es neesmu pārliecināts, ka viņš šoreiz var izdzīvot – vainīgs nav neviena,” sacīja parlamenta deputāts.
Vecākais Nr.10 avots sacīja HuffPost UK: “Tas, ko PLP patiešām vēlas, ir valdība sākt piegādāt, un uz to mēs koncentrējamies.
“Biju pietiekami pazemīgi par lietām, kuras mēs neesam izdarījuši pareizi, bet ir vēl daudz, kas nāk, un mums tas ir jākļūst un jādara.”
Viena leiboristu figūra sacīja, ka ir pāragri runāt par Starmeru aiziešanu no Downing Street. Viņš sacīja: “Viena lieta, ko Keirs ļoti labi, ir pašsaglabāšanās.”
Despite this, a growing number of Labour MPs believe it will soon be time for someone other than Starmer to take the job.
