VerifyMy is one of the operators, and it told the BBC that its research identified it as the method users would find most convenient.

Mr Lulham says the technology checks whether an email has been used to interact with a range of sites, such as financial institutions.

VerifyMy said data could be held for up to 28 days but added that it would often be less, it would be encrypted, and no data would be shared with access to the site.

“It’s right to protect children,” he told BBC News. “We’re providing an easier way to verify someone’s age. If it’s simple and unobtrusive, why wouldn’t you do it to protect children?”

How it works

You upload an image of your ID document that shows your face and age, as well as a picture of yourself. They are then compared to confirm that the document is yours.

Ms Jarvie believes uploading a photo ID and checking credit cards “feels outdated” and “very intrusive”.
