Arī programmatūras atbalsts šajās dienās ir ilgāks. Lai gan Apple skaidri neiestata numuru, cik ilgi tas sola atbalstu, jūs noteikti varat gaidīt piecus gadus un parasti sagaidīt septiņu vai vairāk gadu drošības atjauninājumus.

Ja tik liela daļa lietotāja pieredzes ir atkarīga no operētājsistēmas, jums nav obligāti nepieciešams jaunākais iPhone, lai izmantotu jaunākās funkcijas. Tomēr daudzi no tiem tiek novirzīti uz konkrētiem modeļiem, tāpēc jūs vēlēsities vēlreiz pārbaudīt, ar kuru funkcijām jūsu ierīce ir saderīga.

Apple aparatūra ir izturīga

Look, I’ve owned a million phones, from my Nokia Flip phone in the early 2000s to my BlackBerry (RIP) to multiple iterations of the iPhone over the years. The hardware on these devices just keeps getting more and more robust, with each new model getting more and more robust.

Don’t get me wrong, the iPhone 17’s hardware is certainly a significant upgrade—the device is thinner and lighter, has a 120Hz display that was once reserved for the Pro model, has a significantly improved cooling system, an all-new A19 chip, 12GB of RAM, and the capacity to record video in 8K. But all of these features stand in contrast to an important question: do you need them?

While content creators and tech enthusiasts may be less than thrilled with the upgraded form factor and 48MP telephoto lens, the reality is that the average iPhone user probably won’t take full advantage of these features. I can still take surprisingly good photos with the iPhone 12’s dual 12MP cameras. For high-quality photos, I’d whip out a DSLR in the field.

What could I be missing?

There’s one thing the iPhone 17 lineup has to offer that’s new: the Air model. The new ultra-thin iPhone measures just 5.5mm thick and has a 6.6-inch display with razor-thin bezels, so it’s thinner, lighter, and has a bigger screen. In that sense, it certainly looks like an upgrade, as Apple’s thinnest phone yet.

If you’re in love with the iPhone Air’s design, it could be absolutely worth the upgrade, as there’s no other iPhone on the market that’s as good as it is. Plus, while the iPhone Air isn’t exactly cheap, it’s not exorbitant either, starting at $999.

The Air Ultrathin design does come with some trade-offs, though. First, it drops both the ultrawide and telephoto lenses for a single 48MP rear lens. In that sense, this phone is a commitment to a thin and light form factor, not necessarily a hardware upgrade.

Finally, if you’re looking to take advantage of all the latest Apple intelligence features that iOS 15 has to offer, you’ll need an iPhone model with an A17 Pro chip or higher. That includes nifty features like Automix in Apple Music, Hold Assist, 3D Photos, or AI-generated Genmojis—all of which require an iPhone 15 or later. If you have an older model, you won’t have access to these features.

With each new iteration, the iPhone gets more durable, more powerful, and therefore worth keeping for a few extra years. The iPhone 17 is a solid upgrade, and it’s one of the most impactful models to come out in years, but I don’t need it yet. I want to see how long my iPhone 12 lasts, after all, it was built for the long haul.
