There’s something about the idea of personalized skincare that makes me feel a little anxious.
I love new lotions and potions (who doesn’t?), but my skin may be right sensitive Sally—I’ve had some pretty nasty reactions to too much concoction in the past.
Think redness, burning, tingling; all things you really don’t want your face to experience with anything new.
However, since having children, my skin has changed a lot . It has lost some of its elasticity and vibrancy, becoming a bit dull. I have also aged because, well, I have gotten older (and I have had a lot of sleepless nights, which I am sure does not help). There are more lines here and there that are becoming more pronounced. My skin does not feel as firm as it once did.
I’ve been lucky in many ways, as I haven’t had bad breakouts or pigmentation issues, both of which can reverse after having babies (the excitement, the hormones).
But it’s fair to say that my usual combo of Cerave Cleanser and Beauty Pie Moisturizer had been working VERY HARD—and my skin still felt like it was wanting.
I realized that change was in order. But where to even start? I don’t have the time to see a dermatologist (or the money, let’s face it).
I was intrigued by Dermatica’s online skin consultation offering, especially because they provide personalized skin care tailored to your skin’s very specific needs (after you fill out an easy online questionnaire – it took me about 5-10 minutes in total).
You simply explain what you want to treat – whether it’s acne , Melasma, Rosacea, or something else. In my case, I just wanted a less tired mom and more glow to get them.
As part of the online consultation process , you also share information about your skin and what you’ve reacted to in the past. This is pretty extensive – it’s also worth noting that they cater to pregnant or breastfeeding women, so if you let them know they can tailor your products accordingly.
The Dermatica team then provides you with a specially formulated product designed for you, as well as other key products that will help you achieve your skin goal(s).
In my case, I wanted something that was anti-aging and would help give me a little glow. I got her:
- Care Champion Cream Cleanser – A super luxurious cleanser that melts away makeup, doesn’t dry you out, and leaves your skin really soft.
- My personalized formula that I apply every night after cleansing. I was really worried that it would break me out in a rash, but it didn’t.
- The Nourishing Ceramide + Peptide Moisturizer, which I use morning and night, is just the right amount of nourishment without being greasy.
- Vitamin C/Ascorbic Acid – I use this after cleansing in the morning and before applying moisturizer. It tends to leave my skin a little tight, but I keep my moisturizer on and it seems to balance it all out.
Even within a few days of using these four products , I noticed that my skin felt brighter, firmer, and smoother than it had ever been. (Or at least the smoothest it’s ever been as an adult.)
Honestly, my cheeks are currently rivaling my baby’s softness. I can’t stop petting them. I’ve even had compliments from strangers (which never happens!).
I was very skeptical about how well Online Counseling would work – and how accurate it would be – but I’m happy to report that I’m a convert. Now to see if it stands the test of time…
