A British journalist in the United States has spoken out about his fears for his safety following the killing of Charlie Kirk.
Mehdi Hasan, former political editor of Huffpost UK, said it was “a very scary time” to live in America.
Conservative activist Kirk was shot and killed Wednesday while speaking at an event at Utah Valley University, leaving behind a wife and two young children.
Investigators have released video showing the murder suspect jumping from a roof and running away immediately after the shooting.
Donald Trump has blamed the shooting on the “radical left,” claiming that people who described Kirk as a Nazi are “directly responsible” for his death.
On Thursday’s BBC 2 News Night, Hassan, an outspoken commentator on the left of politics, was asked if he was “more fearful for his safety” following the death of Charlie Kirk.
He said: “Unfortunately, yes. In the last 24 hours I have been inundated with friends and colleagues asking ‘what are you doing, are you getting more security in public’.
“Sadly, tragically, terribly, Kirk was shot by a sniper, apparently from afar, so even his own security team couldn’t protect him.
“It’s very concerning for public figures… it’s insane that this country really has to take a long, hard look at the level of violence and political violence, and it’s a very, very scary time at a time when people are on the up and up and up.”
